2019-20 Crewe Alexandra League Two Preview – 72 in 72

Since relegation from League One in the 2015-16 season, Crewe Alexandra finished 17th, 15th, 12th in the last three League Two campaigns respectively.

Season after season the reason for them not being able to reach Playoffs has been their away form. For instance, last season they had 15 wins, 2 draws at home while only 4 wins and 6 draws away from home.

They had a Turnover of close to 4 million pounds in 2016-17 and 2017-18 which means they won’t be able to retain players if a club from League One or even a club from League two offers better terms financially.

That meant players like George Ray and Ben Garratt who came through their academy didn’t get the terms they were expecting and subsequently, George Ray joined newly-promoted League One side Tranmere Rovers.

Ben Garratt was initially offered a contract by The Alex but management felt he was not showing his complete loyalty for his boyhood club and pulled the offer. He is still on the hunt for a new club.

Jordan Bowery is another major name to leave the club this summer. He usually plays as Center Forward and scored 8 goals for them last season. which means they lost their third highest goal scorer from last season behind Chris Porter and Charlie Kirk on a free transfer.

Other noticeable names to leave the club this summer are Alex Nicholls, Michael Raynes who were both released by the club.

One of the biggest advantages Crew Alexandra has over its competition in this league is their Academy who seem to produce many quality players every year.

For instance, their last season squad had 11 players who joined them from their academy.

Their Current manager, David Artell is a former Gibraltar International and was a well respected Center back around League two football circles.

Most Railwaymen fans remember him as a part of their 2011-12 side which gained promotion from League two via playoffs.

David Artell was also part of the Rotherham United Team that achieved promotion from the Football League Second Division.

He joined Crewe in Management role as an Academy Manager in 2014 and is credited with the development of the few current players.

Artell was promoted to Senior team manager role in 2017 when Crewe Alex was in the brink of Relegation from League Two and managed them in securing a safe 17th position. He has been the manager of The Railwaymen since.

As a manager he has a record of Winning 46, Drawing 18 in 125 games in charge. Being a former player and having a good idea about youth setup is an added bonus for Crew Alexandra Fans.

Olly Lancashire

The 30-year-old English Center Back has spent most of his playing career in League One and League Two. Olly has made over 250 appearances in both the leagues combined.

He has come through the ranks of Southampton Academy and made 13 appearances for their senior team. He has Walsall, Rochdale, Shrewsbury Town and Swindon Town on his resume.

Last season he started the first 16 out of 17 games for Swindon Town but seemed to have fallen out of favor in the second half of the season. That seems to be the reason for him Joining Crewe Alex.

With the departure of George Ray and Michael Raynes, he is a much-needed signing for Crewe Alex this season.

Daniel Powell

Daniel Powell is a Right Winger but can also play in the Left Wing. He came through the ranks at MK Dons and was part of the team that helped them win the promotion to Championship in the 2014-15 season.

But he soon learned that he was not in plans to play in championship side. Which prompted him to join the then League One side Northampton Town in the 2017-18 season.

He was unable to save Northampton Town from relegation to League Two and played a complete season of League Two football with them last season.

Powell was The Cobblers fifth highest goal scorer last season with 6 goals.
