Cambridge United 2019-20 League Two preview – 72 in 72

Cambridge United fans will be optimistic about their team’s mid-table finish this season. If Cambridge were to get promoted it will be one of the fairy tale stories of the season.

They play at Abbey Stadium which has a capacity of 8,127 and they had an average attendance of 4,366 for the 2018-19 campaign.

That means we can expect their budget to be nowhere near the likes of Salford, Bradford. So, they will rely heavily on free and loan signings with the hope that one of them turns into a star.

Manager

Colin Calderwood was appointed as manager In 2018 December. Colin is known for his 4 promotions with Swindon Town as a player.

He joined Swindon in the then 4th division from Mansfield Town and was part of their League ladder climb to First Division and later Premier League as a player.

After Leaving Swindon he joined Tottenham Hotspur where he spent six seasons, later joining Aston Villa and ended his career at Nottingham Forest.

He was also capped 36 times as a defender by Scottish National Team and was part of Euro 1996, 1998 FIFA World Cup squads.

After his playing career, he coached Tottenham reserves, Northampton Town, Nottingham Forest. Hibernian as manager before joining Cambridge United.

Calderwood also worked as an assistant coach under Joe Kinnear, Alan Shearer, Chris Hughton, and Steve Bruce for over eight years.

He has also achieved promotions with Northampton Town, Nottingham Forest from League Two and League One respectively as a manager.

So, We can say that he is one of the very experienced coaches in the game today.

His record with The U’s till date is 7 Wins and 6 draws which was good enough to protect clubs Football League status last season.

New Signings

Cambridge United have lost two very important defensive players Jake Carroll, Brad Halliday to Motherwell, and Doncaster Rovers this season.

Both Jake Carroll and Brad Halliday are very well known as part of The U’s defense. So, there is no doubt in saying they need to strengthen their defense

George Maris, their star midfielder has not signed a new contract yet with the club and is being rumored with moves away from the club.

Till date they have announced the following signings.

Harvey Knibbs

Harvey is a 20-Year-Old center forward who came through the ranks of the Aston Villa Youth system. He has made 57 appearances with U-18 and U-23 teams for the Villans and scored 17 times.

He signed with the U’s after being released from the Villas youth system. Noticeably he has never made an appearance at senior level.

Luke Hannant

Luke Hannant joined Cambridge from last seasons fellow relegation rivals Port Vale whom he has joined after his 6 Year Non-League career.

He had one and a half full seasons of League Two football under his belt. He is still 25 so Cambridge fans can hope he performs for them this season.

Another noticeable thing about him is that he spent two years at the U’s academy before being released aged 18.

Kyle Knoyle

Kyle Knoyle is the most exciting signing to date for the U’s fans. He rejected the contract offered by his former club Swindon Town to sign a two year deal with Cambridge United.

The 22-Year-Old Right back was the product of West Ham Academy and spent time with Dundee United, and Wigan Athletic on the loan while being part of East London clubs youth setup.

After that, he joined Swindon Town where he spent 2 years at the club and had made 48 appearances across all competitions last season.

Wes Hoolahan(Trial)

Wes Hoolahan is all set to go on trial with the League two side if reports are to be believed.

He is very well known for his time with Norwich City and is touted as Club legend by many in football circles.

The 37-year-old former Irish international spent 9 years at the Carrow Road making nearly 323 appearances for The Canaries.

He will undoubtedly bring his experience to the U’s dressing room.

Callum Burton

Callum Burton is a 22-Year-Old English Goalkeeper. He joins The U’s after he is released by his former team Hull City this summer.

We don’t expect him to go straight into the squad as he faces competition from Dimitar Mitov and Finley Iron for No.1 shirt.

Callum Burton represented England at U-16,17, and 18’s level whilst he was at Shrewsbury Town Academy.

Last season he spent the first half of the season on loan at Chesterfield FC in National League. But them sitting in the relegation zone and change in management meant his loan deal was not extended to a full season.

Away Journey

If a Cambridge fan wants to attend all the away matches this season then they have to travel 3365 miles which means on average they have to travel 146.3 miles per game.

The longest trip they have to take would be to Plymouth which is 267 miles away.

Odds of Promotion/Relegation

Many of the bookmakers are leaning towards relegation or non-promotion season than promotion for the U’s this season.

Odds being offered for Cambridge United in League two this season are

OddsTitle
28/1 winning title
13/2 Promotion
14/1 Relegation
