Newport County 2019-20 League Two Preview

From FA Cup fifth-round home tie against Premier League champions Manchester City to an entertaining brand of football, 2018-19 was a season to remember for most Newport County fans.

If it weren’t for the 119th-minute goal from Tranmere Rovers in Playoffs final, they could be playing in League One this season.

But FA Cup run in which they played three Premier League clubs Leicester City, Man City and Championship side Middlesbrough twice meant they are in a better financial situation than they were at the start of last season.

To go into more detail condition of their finances. The club reported a loss of 351,456 pounds in 2017. In 2018 however they reported a profit of 82,680, this was because of their FA Cup run in the 2017-18 season which saw them play against Leeds United and twice against Tottenham Hotspur.

In 2018-19 however their matches against Wrexham(Reply), Leicester City, Man City, and Middlesbrough were all televised Nationally and Leicester City, Man City matches were televised Internationally. Which meant more T.V. Money.

We also have to add £180,000 prize money that comes with winning the Fourth Round tie.

When your team has an amazing season it is very important that key players are retained by the club. But they weren’t able to retain Joe Day, and Dan Butler as they got offers from Cardiff City, and Peterborough United respectively.

But they were able to retain their most important asset, their manager Michael Flynn.

Newport County Manager

Michael Flynn is the current manager of Newport County. He started his playing career at Newport County and ended it there. But his relationship with the club has not been always a pleasant one as he was sacked from two different jobs in the space of a few weeks in 2015.

Flynn was a player as well as Academy Coach in 2015 but the Manager at the time Terry Butcher deemed him surplus for both the roles and sacked him as a player first and then as Coach.

But that didn’t last long as poor performances that season meant Terry Butcher was sacked and Michael Flynn who played a key role in Newport County Supporters’ Trust takeover. Which led to him joining the club back as a coach.

In 2016–17 when The Exiles were bottom of the League with just 12 games to go. The Newport born Flynn was appointed as a caretaker manager and guided them to a 22nd place safety.

He guided them to 11th position the following season and to playoffs final last season along with their FA Cup dream runs.

He is also a UEFA Professional Licence holder and has done it from FAW(Wales).
